Our communities had a great time celebrating National Assisted Living Week last week. The theme for this year was Caring is EssentiAL. We really wanted to hone in on the caring aspect this year and focused on a different characteristic of caring every day. Our themes were: Caring through Culture, Caring through Connection, Caring with Courage, Caring with Commitment, Caring with Communication, Caring with Confidence and Caring with Compassion. Each day, our communities prepared fun activities that corresponded to the theme of that day.
We kicked off our first day, Caring through Culture, with an ‘80s-themed launch party that began our Walk Across America program. This program is designed to get our residents engaged in mind, body and soul through physically walking the number of steps it takes to get to each location while learning interesting facts about states across the country. We started this journey in Portland, Oregon. A lot of our communities got their residents outside walking around their buildings while learning all about Portland and Oregon. Other communities did virtual tours of fun activities Portland has to offer. Our Bridgeview Estates Senior Living Community in Twin Falls, Idaho, went on a virtual tour of the Japanese Garden in Portland, Oregon. The residents loved seeing the beauty of a different state.
Our theme for Monday, Sept. 14, was Caring through Connection. We know how important connection is for our residents, especially physical connection with their loved ones. With visitor restrictions put in place these past months, our residents haven’t been able to hug their loved ones. We wanted to change that! Each of our communities set up cuddle curtain stations in their buildings. Families could schedule a time for them to come and finally hug their loved ones. These were such sweet and heartwarming moments to witness.
The third day of National Assisted Living Week’s theme was Caring with Courage. We took this day to thank the heroes in our local communities. The residents at each community took time to write thank-you notes on cut-out hearts to give to hospital workers, EMS workers, police officers and firefighters.
We celebrated Wednesday, Sept. 16, with our theme of Caring with Commitment. We focused on our amazing associates for this day. Our communities handed out care survival kits to their associates and highlighted their Going the Extra Mile customer service award winners. Many communities provided lunch to show their appreciation for all the work their associates do for the residents.
Our theme for the fifth day of National Assisted Living Week was Caring with Communication. A lot of our communication has gone virtual in recent months. This day focused on teaching residents how to virtually communicate over video chat with family members and even doctor’s appointments.
Caring with Confidence was our theme for the sixth day of NALW. This day was all about cooking with confidence. Many of our chefs did live cooking demonstrations on various dishes for the residents to watch and learn. We pride ourselves in our communities having some of the best chefs around.
We ended this week of celebration with our theme of Caring with Compassion. We kept the last day a little less busy with just focusing on the residents. Associates placed cut-out hearts with encouraging messages on each resident’s door to remind them how much we love them. Every community ended the day with a cozy movie night outside.
We absolutely loved celebrating National Assisted Living Week this year! We certainly spread the theme, Caring is EssentiAL, throughout the whole week in every aspect. Caring for our residents is what we do, and we wouldn’t want it any other way.
