Music has a way of touching the soul, and at times a song delivers a message in a distinctive way that cannot be matched by the printed page of a book. One of my favorite experiences in church is watching our sanctuary choir sing songs of worship and praise. I don't have an exceptionally good singing voice, but despite that fact, when I sing along with the choir, even though I am sitting at a distance, I feel as though I am part of something truly special. Our choir director has a unique way of bringing out the best in each singer. I have witnessed many people in the choir sing beautiful solos, but nothing sounds more glorious than the myriad of voices singing in harmony as a choir.

With a choir, athletic team, organization, or family, everyone plays a different role. No one's role is more important than another's, but it is the ability to coordinate and unify people collectively that brings harmony and, as a result, success.

You might be familiar with the former U.S. Olympic Hockey coach Herb Brooks. His story was portrayed by Kurt Russell in the 2004 movie Miracle. There is a moment in the movie when the assistant coach questions Brooks as to why some of the best players on the list have not been chosen. Brooks responds, "I'm not looking for the best players. I'm looking for the right players."

Brooks finally handpicked a team that went on to win the gold medal by defeating a seemingly invincible Russian team.

I am sure that within our church choir there are people like me who are not necessarily the most talented singers. However, they show up for practices and give their best. As a result, their cooperative character, servants' heart, and common bond create something amazing and impactful.

Each of our Century Park communities is home to myriads of people – residents and associates. Each of us brings diverse talents, skills, and experiences to the community. However, our underlying character traits and core values are shared. While we are not perfect, we daily put the needs of others above our own. Our residents and associates believe in our unique sense of community, and within that community we respect each other and honor each other despite our differences. And just like a choir singing in harmony with each person doing their part, together we create beautiful music that touches the soul.
